Your first session is a chance to get to know each other and talk about what brings you to therapy. You’ll discuss your background, current challenges, and what you hope to achieve.
It’s also an opportunity to ask questions and see if the fit feels right for you. Many clients describe the first session as a gentle introduction, focused on understanding your needs and planning a way forward together.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, or unsure how to manage certain situations, counselling can help. Therapy isn’t only for crisis; it’s a space to gain clarity, process emotions, and learn new ways of coping.
Even if you’re uncertain, starting a conversation can help you decide whether therapy feels supportive and worthwhile for you.
Counselling often focuses on specific issues and helps you navigate current challenges or life changes. Psychotherapy tends to explore deeper patterns that may have developed over time, often linked to past experiences.
In Ireland, there is no direct classification for each discipline currently, however, CORU is currently in the process of proposing regulations to classify each discipline separately.
At Mo Chara Counselling, both approaches are integrated so that therapy can be short-term, solution-focused, or more in-depth depending on your needs.
The number of sessions varies for each person. Some people attend for a few weeks to address a specific issue, while others prefer longer-term support.
You can discuss your goals and preferred pace with your therapist, and review progress regularly. Sessions typically last 50 minutes and it is recommended tha they take place weekly.
